What to make with a Jelly Roll

So we all know about jelly rolls, but what can you make with them? There are so many more options than just a classic quilt. so today I am going to give you a list of all the different things I personally like making with my jelly rolls.

First, let’s talk about what a jelly roll is - in case you are new to sewing and don’t know what they are. A jelly roll is a bundle of pre cut fabric strips usually 2.5inch wide and raging from about 38-40 inch long. Makers of jelly rolls will bundle patterned and solids together to give a beautiful set that is cohesive and fun. My favourite brand of jelly roll is Tinyspool and co. They have beautiful colour options and I love how the edges of their jelly rolls are pinked.

Now that we are familiar with what a jelly roll is let’s dive into the many projects you can make with them!

Quilts -

Probably the most common use for jelly rolls. Quilts are easy to make with jelly rolls because you can save a lot of time cutting fabrics and just sew them all together in the 40 inch strips and piece it together. Of course with the fabric you can also make quilt blocks too which are a fun way to use them. You can also use a jelly roll with yardage if you want to get really fancy with it.

Rugs -

My personal favourite thing to make with jelly rolls. Jelly roll rugs are very popular in the sewing community and it is because they are so fun to make. Using batting and the fabric to make a long cord, you sew the cord into ovals, circles, or you can cut them to the same length and make a rectangle rug! The process is so relaxing and the results are beautiful.

Pot Pads -

Need a quick small sewn gift idea? Jelly Roll pot pads are a great gift for those who love gorgeous kitchen supplies. Made in the same fashion as the rugs on a smaller scale you can get great pot pads or even casserole pads.

Patch work projects -

I grouped this together into one because the options are endless. I love making patchwork projects and jelly rolls make it so much easier! Some things I have made include, laptop sleeves, oven mits, pillow cases and more. By sewing the strips together into your own fabric blocks you can achieve a stunning, cohesive patchwork project.

Cord holders -

Cord holders are great gift ideas for your tech loving friends. Use a one strip, elastic, a button and some interfacing, and you’ve got yourself at least four cord holders.

These are just a few ideas for what you can use a jelly roll for. If you get really creative you make anything really! Share some ideas down below or over on my instagram. Stay tuned for more from me soon!
